Why Is Your Sportsbook Withdrawal Still Pending? 6 Common Causes

📅 October 2026 ⏱️ 7 min read 💰 Payments & Payouts

A pending withdrawal almost always means your request is waiting at one of a few checkpoints: identity checks, an account review, a payment-method problem, bonus terms, or ordinary processing time. It rarely means the money is gone. Ohio also has a rule that sets a clock on the sportsbook side, which gives you something concrete to measure against.

What Ohio's rule says

Under Ohio Administrative Code rule 3775-16-03, a sports gaming operator must process a patron's withdrawal request within five business days. The operator may delay it if it believes in good faith that fraud or unlawful conduct is involved, but it then has to tell you the general nature of the investigation and send written status updates at least every tenth business day. That is the rule as published on codes.ohio.gov at the time of writing (October 2026). Check the current text if it matters for your situation.

"Pending" Can Mean Three Different Things

The word covers several stages, and each has its own clock:

The five-business-day window covers the sportsbook's handling of your request. What happens after that depends on the payment rail, and weekends and bank holidays do not count as business days. Knowing which stage you are in is the fastest way to know who to ask.

6 Common Causes of a Pending Withdrawal

1. Identity verification is not finished

Ohio requires sportsbook accounts to be created only for patrons whose identities have been successfully verified and documented, and operators have to re-verify when there is reasonable suspicion an account has been compromised. In practice, a first cash-out is also where many operators ask for extra documents, such as a clearer ID photo or proof of address. If a request sits untouched, check your inbox, spam folder and the app's verification or documents section first. Our guide to identity verification delays covers this step in detail.

2. The account is under a fraud or compliance review

Operators screen withdrawals for fraud, money laundering and responsible gaming concerns. Larger or unusual requests, a recent change of email, phone or bank details, or a mismatch between deposit and withdrawal activity can all send a request into manual review. The rule above lets an operator delay a withdrawal for this reason, but it has to give you notice and recurring written updates. If you hear nothing, that silence is worth raising with support.

3. The payment method does not line up

Common culprits are an expired card, a bank account that is not in your name, a method that accepts deposits but not withdrawals, or a newly added method that has not been verified. Many operators route withdrawals back to a method you have already used. Policies differ by operator and by method, so read the withdrawal section of your sportsbook's help pages instead of assuming.

4. Bonus or promotion terms are in play

Promotional funds can come with playthrough terms. Ohio's promotions rule (3775-16-09) allows operators to require bonus funds to be played through before they are withdrawn, but says the terms must not restrict you from withdrawing your own funds or winnings from wagers placed with them. If a withdrawal is stuck while a promotion is active, ask which part of the balance is being held and why. Our playthrough requirements guide explains how to read those terms.

5. Part of the balance is not withdrawable yet

The number on your home screen may include money that is tied up in open bets, bonus credit, or winnings that have not finished settling. If you request more than the withdrawable balance, the request can be reduced or rejected. Look for a separate "withdrawable" or "available to withdraw" figure and compare it to the amount you asked for.

6. Timing, cutoffs and processing batches

Requests made late on a Friday, around a holiday, or during a very busy sports weekend can sit until the next business day. Some payment rails move quickly and others batch transfers, so the same sportsbook can feel fast one week and slow the next. A bank may also take extra time to post an incoming transfer after the sportsbook has done its part.

A Quick Checklist Before You Contact Support

📋 Check These First

☐

The status label and date

Screenshot the withdrawal screen showing the amount, method and the date you requested it.

☐

Verification and documents

Look for any open request for ID, proof of address or proof of payment-method ownership.

☐

Active promotions

Open the promotions or bonus section and note any playthrough terms or expiry dates.

☐

Payment method details

Confirm the card is not expired and the bank or wallet account is in your name.

☐

Business days elapsed

Count only weekdays that are not holidays, starting the day after your request.

What to Say When You Contact Support

Vague messages get vague replies. A better message names the date and amount, says what you have already checked, and asks three direct questions: which step is my withdrawal waiting on, what exactly do you need from me, and when will I get a written update? Keep the ticket number and a copy of any chat transcript.

Ask before cancelling and resubmitting. At some operators a new request can start the clock again, so get an answer first. If the five-business-day window has passed with no explanation or notice, say so politely and cite the rule number. If the operator still does not respond, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, which regulates sports gaming in Ohio, lists contact details at casinocontrol.ohio.gov. The commission's site did not describe a specific complaint form when we checked, so ask how to raise a patron concern.

How to Avoid a Stuck Withdrawal Next Time

The Bottom Line

Start by finding out which stage your withdrawal is in, then work through the six causes in order: verification, review, payment method, promotion terms, withdrawable balance and timing. Document everything, give the operator a reasonable chance to respond within the five-business-day window, and escalate with specifics if it does not. Compare the speed of different methods in our withdrawal speed article, and use the troubleshooting guide for other account problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a sportsbook withdrawal take in Ohio?

Under Ohio Administrative Code rule 3775-16-03, an operator must process a withdrawal request within five business days, unless it is investigating suspected fraud or unlawful conduct and gives you notice. After that, your bank or payment provider has its own posting time.

Why is my first withdrawal slower than later ones?

First withdrawals often trigger extra checks, such as confirming your identity or that the payment method belongs to you. Finishing verification before you need to cash out usually removes that step.

Can a bonus stop me from withdrawing my own money?

Ohio rule 3775-16-09 says promotion terms must not restrict you from withdrawing your own funds or winnings from wagers placed with them, although bonus funds themselves can carry playthrough terms. If your own money seems held, ask support to explain exactly which balance is restricted.

Should I cancel a pending withdrawal and request it again?

Ask support first. Cancelling can return the money to your balance and may restart the processing clock at some operators, and the funds could end up back in play if you bet them.

Who do I contact if the sportsbook will not explain the delay?

Start with the operator in writing and keep records. If you still get no answer, the Ohio Casino Control Commission regulates sports gaming and lists contact information at casinocontrol.ohio.gov.

Sources and Verification

Rules cited were read on codes.ohio.gov in October 2026: Ohio Adm.Code 3775-16-03, Sports gaming accounts (withdrawals, identity verification; effective October 26, 2024) and 3775-16-09, Promotions and bonuses. The Ohio Casino Control Commission is at casinocontrol.ohio.gov. We did not verify individual sportsbooks' internal policies, such as which methods allow withdrawals or how long any specific book takes, because they change often and differ by operator. Confirm details in your sportsbook's help center.
